A new study led by Maya R. Jerath, MD, PhD, with former allergy/immunology fellow Charity Owusu‑Asare, MD, demonstrates the safety and feasibility of an at‑home mammalian meat reintroduction protocol for patients with alpha‑gal syndrome. Published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, the retrospective review identified 21 patients eligible for reintroduction based on declining alpha‑gal IgE levels. Of the 19 patients who proceeded, 100% successfully completed the structured 9‑day protocol and fully liberalized their diets, with only minor, self‑limited symptoms reported.

This work provides one of the first detailed examples of a stepwise reintroduction approach for patients who may have cleared alpha‑gal sensitivity and offers clinicians a practical framework to guide shared decision‑making. The promising results underscore a meaningful contribution to the evolving management of this increasingly recognized tick‑borne allergy.
