Pat and I have a strong belief that philanthropy is an important part of our financial planning. It is an opportunity to give back to or support institutions that have played important parts in our lives. Having been a member of the allergy division for over 50 years (combining my fellowship and faculty appointment), we felt that the division was an institution that had been very good to us, that has been an important part of our lives, and where we could make an impact. In thinking about the needs of the division, one area that came to mind was funding to support our third-year fellows who are in the program with an eye to a career in academic medicine. There has been a need for monetary support for third-year fellow research activities. We decided to set up an endowment to which we will contribute on an ongoing basis and to which others can also contribute. The income from this endowment will support third-year fellow research, and we hope will continue long after we are gone, will help to make the allergy division and its training program stronger.
